The RRP Double Disc Spur Gear Kit looked like a smart addition. We purchased a plastic spur gear kit and a steel spur gear kit and upgraded two of our trucks
We had a few troubles getting it installed without significant wobble. After several attempts, we contacted RRP for some help. They were very responsive and gave us some items to try. After those suggestions didn't do the trick, we ended up removing a small aluminum spacer from between the clutch kit and the transmission. It was better but not 100%. RRP tells us that the spacer is meant to help reduce wobble. We tried sanding the shaft, sanding the discs flat, everything you could imagine. We pulled the setup off and installed the stock setup....and it spun perfectly straight. We believe there is a machining problem with the clutch back plates that is causing this.
After some pounding with the Double Disc setup, we are impressed by its performance. The slipper seems to work even with the wobble. The kit includes a bearing to replace the stock bushing (nice). The disc backing plates are anodized aluminum (again nice touch) and the slipper discs are replaceable. The discs have a large surface area for smooth slipping. The spur gear is also replaceable and can be changed without removing the entire assembly (another nice touch). Three allen head screws and the gear is out (you may have to remove the fuel tank...no biggie). Be sure to add a little Loctite when installing these screws!
All in all, it seems to be a great idea but the constant wobbling is not right. It cost us about $40 per kit ($80 total) and honestly we would have been better off with the stock setup. In fact we ended up removing the RRP setups from both our trucks and going back to the stock setups. We feel bad about the low rating but nonetheless, it isn't quite right. And it's not just one of the gears. Both of the gears wobble terribly to the point of rubbing the clutch bell. Maybe we just happened to get two bad kits?
BYT spur gear tip: If you are slamming spur teeth on jump landings, chances are you have the nut too tight (or your fiber plates or slipper pugs are worn out)! Try loosening the nut just a little bit. Provided your gear mesh is correct, it should help save your teeth!
