Chances
are if you are like us, you rarely think of your brake. You think
more about going faster and jumping higher! Hey, we can relate. But
there will come a time where the stock brake disc will become unable
to do the job. And when you think about it, stopping your truck is
just as important as making it go fast. Think about it! The best performance
and race cars in the world also have the best braking systems. Your
truck should be no different.
Well, we were recently faced with the job of replacing our totally
shot stock brake disc with something new. Would we install another
stock unit? Are you kidding? You know us better than that!
We
have always had good luck with FullForce RC products and wanted to
give their carbon fiber brake disk a try. The disk fits both the Savage
and the T-Maxx. It looks like it is made from three layers of carbon
fiber. It appears to be think and feels very strong. It is also vented
which will give the carbon dust a place to go under heavy braking
rather than getting stuck to the face of the disk and reducing braking
force.
Installation is simple and easy. We prefer to remove the front end
of the truck for brake work. remove the four screws that secure the
chassis to the front bulkheads and remove the front skid plate. Remove
the hardware securing the front steering turnbuckles to the axle carriers
and the front of the truck is off. I am sure you could weasel the
disk in there without doing these steps but it is time well spent
and makes the install much easier. Remove the front drive shaft and
remove the two screws holding the brake disk and pads onto the transmission.
Check out the metal brake pads. If they look pretty grooved up, flip
them around so the smoother side is facing the new disk. That will
help the disk have a long and prosperous life. Be sure to check your
brake linkage and adjust it accordingly.
We quickly put the truck back together as we could not wait to get
it out and slam on the binders! After the engine warmed up, we gave
it a few low to medium speed brake pulls to give the disk a chance
to fit into the brake pads. Braking was smooth and simply amazing
compared to the worn out stock disk we had been running! Ok, enough
of that slow stuff! Time for a high-speed brake slam.
We took the truck out on the street and wound it up. After second
gear was cranked out, we gave it a big brake pull. WHOOPS!!! The truck
did a full front flip, bounced off the top of the roll bar and landed
back on its wheels! YEEOW! Time to make another adjustment to the
brake linkage :) It might be a bit too strong.
After a small adjustment to the linkage, we tried the same thing again
and were able to dial the truck in beautifully. The brake felt solid
and ample to stop the big metal truck at any speed on any surface.
We beat on the brakes for about an hour and felt absolutely no brake
fade whatsoever. Very impressive.
This is a great brake disk. And for the measly price of $8, don't
even think about putting a stock disk back in your truck. How many
things have you bought for your truck that were under $10 and worked
great? Same here...we can't think of very many. The FFRC brake disk
is at the top of that list. Yet another great product from FFRC.
