When was the last time you disassembled your RC vehicle and cleaned the bearings? We thought so.... Well, you need to get it done! Bearings that are clean and oiled will spin easier and cause less drag in the drivetrain. That means more power is put to the ground, you can go faster and on electric vehicles, your battery life will increase!
How do you clean bearings so you can re-oil them for optimum performance? Go to your LHS and pick up a RPM Bearing Blaster. This ingenious little tool allows you to clean bearings easily and thoroughly. Excellent instructions are included with the Bearing Blaster. All you need is a can of bearing cleaner (electric motor cleaner) and a rag....and of course some dirty bearings. After they are clean you will need to re-oil them with the proper lubricant. Your LHS will have a variety of oils you can use to relubricate the bearings.
So how does it work? First step - put on your safety glasses! Next, place the bearing into the BB (carefully remove the outer seal if the bearing has one - you can reuse it if you are careful not to damage it when taking it out). Then attach the BB cap to a can of motor spray/bearing cleaner (see picture to the left). Assemble the BB and spray away! You will want to do this on a rag to catch all the spray and dirt that will be flying out of your bearing. We used a clean portion of the rag for each blast so we could see when there was no more debris coming out of the bearing. Remove the bearing and let it dry. Relubricate and reinstall! You can even use the BB to relubricate your bearings!
The RPM Bearing Blaster works incredibly well and makes the bearing maintenance process as easy as it can be. It is so small it fits in any toolbox and at a price of about $9, it will pay for itself every time you use it by adding life to your bearings. Let's face it, bearings are not cheap!
